DESIGN PROCESS/SPACE PLANNING

To begin this project, research was conducted on clinical case studies, theories of people and their environment,  and the effects environments have on people's well-being. A site visit to the current clinic this expansion was designed for was also part of the pre-design process of the project. All of this information was considered and used in the design process, helping with decisions of material, stimulation, positive distraction, and over all layout of the space.

Below are diagrams that were created while space planning.

The bubble diagram to the left shows the spatial relationships between different areas of the clinic. This part of the process gave a better understanding of which spaces had priority adjacency and which needed to be relatively nearby.

This diagram also includes arrows that indicate where the ideal major and minor paths of travel would be. The coloring identifies the different users of the space which also effects the layout.

The Blocking Diagram uses the information from the bubble flow and integrates it into the shell of the building. This diagram shows the first development of the floor-plan, which would then be tweaked and refined to produce the final floor-plan. The main goal of this process was to create an effective layout for two separate circulation paths, with logical grouping and placement of individual spaces.
